The nuclear disaster occurred in April 26th of 1986. The disaster that claimed 31 lives and affected many people is now known as the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. When an emergency shut down was issued, there was a larger power spike, which ruptured the reactor vessels and created several steam explosions. It was the only accident where radiation caused many fatalities. The battle to avoid a greater catastrophe by containing the contamination involved over 500,000 workers. It approximately cost 18 million rubles ($397897047786.24 Australian dollars.) The disaster affected everyone in the area and everyone had move out due to the high levels of radiation created. Several studies have indicated that the rate of fatalities of children due to thyroid cancer in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia has largely increased since the Chernobyl disaster. The radiation has had long term affects on animals and people, creating deformities and diseases, which often resulted in many fatalities. The long-term issue politically and scientifically was very controversial. The number of people whose lives were affected by the disaster was enormous. Over 300,000 people were forced to resettle and the political nature of nuclear energy may have affected scientific studies. The Chernobyl disaster definitely had a lot of long-term issues economically and politically but it also had many short-term impacts. The fires inside of the remains of the reactor resulted in creating radioactive clouds, which crossed over most of Europe and as far as Canada. This was discovered on the 28th of April, when Forsmark nuclear power plant workers 1100km away from the Chernobyl site were found to have the same radioactive particles on their clothing. There were a lot of tests to see where the radiation came from and the results eventually concluded that the radioactive particles were from the Chernobyl power plant.
