This horrific advertisement for Nike has shocked the virtual world as bloggers are going wild on the content of this photo. The photographer named Sharad Haskar captured this image in the slums of India. The photo to most people came across disturbing and constantly people felt disgusted at the thought of the photographer doing nothing to help the boy but take a photo of him doing an action that people would say is a private act. The geographic point of this photo we found toilets were scarce and unsanitary. This gives us some indication why he was urinating on the wall. The symbolism of the dog captures that the boy is performing the actions of a common dog by urinating on walls. This switch of roles shocked viewers and the pure poverty of the area have made this tragic situation reality. The boy we see is wearing no shoes and few clothes ultimately revealing his minor wealth. Back to the advertisement side, the origin of the word Nike is named after the Greek goddess for victory. This boy did not look victorious but instead sad as we analyse his body structure it’s slouched down, even though his face isn’t revealed this background illustrates the environment affecting his mood. Nike has the slogan “just do it” and ironically this man has just done it by taking the photo for the very purpose of company advertisements.
Money was why he took the photo and money is exactly what he got from the multi billion-dollar company. Nikes controversial advertisement either filled viewers with intense anger or empathy for the boy but we do know it did not bring joy to anyone but the very own company it was created from.
